Project Overview

The hydro development investigation on the Mohaka River has had a long history with its potential recognised in the early 1900s. In 2005 Meridian Energy representatives approached Ngati Pahauwera Section 30 Representatives to ask if we (Ngati Pahauwera) were interested in working in partnership with Meridian to investigate this development further. Following a number of meetings between Ngati Pahauwera Section 30 Representatives and Meridian Energy a Hui was held at Mohaka Marae, 6 November 2005.Whanau attending the Hui agreed to support the preliminary investigations of the hydro development but reiterated that the development would only proceed with the support of the people. Meridian Energy understands the peoples view and is adamant Ngati Pahauwera support is critical in the event the development should proceed.

Since the November 2005 Hui much has happened. Ngati Pahauwera Section 30 Representatives have attended several Hui with Meridian?s technical experts and participated in the commissioning of the preliminary technical studies. The studies include:

  • Cultural issues;
  • Initial study of whitebait, eels, trout, and other species;
  • Native fish passage;
  • Trout movement and passage;
  • Gravel and sediment movement;
  • Engineering design;
  • Earthquake issues.
