April 2010 Panui
FORESHORE & SEABED REVIEW
Attorney General Chris Finlayson has completed his round the motu, and written submissions closed on 30 April 2010. The Trustees made a submission on the proposal, copies of which are available on request. The Crown has not yet announced what its next steps will be in response to the submissions, but we will keep you updated, and you can also check the Ministry of Justice website, which will be publishing all of the submissions shortly.
CROSS CLAIMS
Ngati Pahauwera and Maungaharuru Tangitu Inc Trustees have met twice this month and each are now having their own discussions with the Crown about resolving any cross claims. The NPDT Trustees fulfilled a promise to other hapu south of the Waikari River to meet to update them on the process we are still trying to work through and let them know that we are still focussed on making sure that their interests are represented. The meeting was held at Pukemokimoki Marae in Napier and was well attended.
RIVERS REDRESS
We continue to seek direct local involvement in the management of the Rivers and have communicated this clearly to the Crown. We will be pursuing this again directly with the Minister in early June 2010.
RIVERS SCOPING STUDY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE INITIATIVE
The Trustees had a useful meeting with Hawkes Bay Regional Council staff on 29 April 2010 to discuss their draft inventory of all of the research the Council holds in respect of the Mohaka, Waihua and Waikari Rivers and catchments. We have provided the Council with comments on the draft, and hope to receive a finalised report by the end of May. However in the meantime the draft allowed us to identify two areas where further research is required. We are therefore applying for funding to allow us to undertake a Cultural Health Assessment of the Rivers involving our own people, and for a scientist to provide analyse the council report and our Cultural Health Assessment and provide recommendations of practical projects to improve the health of the Rivers as part of the good governance initiative. We will update you on progress with these applications.
CO-MANAGEMENT CHARTER
Much thought continues to go into our negotiations regarding the DoC Charter. We are working positively with DoC officials to try to ensure it is a positive enduring partnership regarding Conservation activities in our area, in co-management with the Minister, Director General and the Department of Conservation.
HUI-A-IWI
Come and give your opinions on how and what you expect of the Trustees. On May 22nd 2010 at Putere Marae. See you there.
