CROSS CLAIMS
The Trustees have held meetings with all relevant neighbouring iwi/hapu south of the Waikare River and Ngati Ruapani and Ngati Whare on our other boundaries. We have reached the conclusion that we all want the best deal for our people. Where ever and when ever help is required in negotiating with the Crown, we will help. After all we are not the ‘enemy’, we too seek the best deals we can get.
RIVER’S REDRESS
The RMA framework for Rivers does not give NPDT any say over their rivers. We are the Kaitiaki and hold rangatiratanga over these resources (the rivers, Waihua and Mohaka). Our aim is to take off the Crown’s ‘blindfold’ and make them recognise our status. A co-management plan has been arrived at.
DEED DRAFTING
The Crown has the responsibility of writing up a Draft Deed Of Settlement (DOS). We have read and amended up to three draft copies to date. This is our one and only opportunity to get it right. An agreed draft needs to be presented to the Treaty Cabinet Committee by March 3 2010.
HISTORICAL ACCOUNT
A draft copy of our Historical Account was critiqued by Don Loveridge an Historian approved by the Crown. He hummed and harred over our portrayal of losing land through the Maori Land Court dealings. It is a known fact the our Maori people lost more land by the pen than the sword.
D.O.C CO-MANAGEMENT REGIME
NPDT have insisted that we have full involvement in all decision making in respect of each and every reserve under their jurisdiction in our core area of interest. Notification or consultation is not in our vocabulary. We will be involved at the topmost level when decisions are to be made.
COMPLETION OF DEED OF SETTLEMENT
NPDT Trustees were aiming to have DOS done and dusted by November 2009. Due to the many delays of meeting with DOC, the Foreshore and Seabed Review, the changes to our Crown negotiating Leader and Team, the dilly dalying of the hapu/iwi south of the Waikare River, we now have to look towards 2010 completion.
THE TRUSTEES OF THE NGATI PAHAUWERA DEVELOPMENT AND TIAKI TRUSTS
On behalf of the Trustees and the Administration Team, we wish all Ngati Pahauwera people, wherever you are, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. God bless you and yours always.
