February 2010 Panui
HISTORICAL ACCOUNT
To whom does this historic account refer to? Who was/is, involved in this historic account? The answer is, The Crown and Ngati Pahauwera. Therefore to gain redress on the events that impacted on Ngati Pahauwera through negligence or otherwise by Crown actions, it is imperative that Ngati Pahauwera write the account. No others could feel the pain and loss of Pahauwera whanau and Pahauwera land like our Ngati Pahauwera tupuna did. They were there, they saw their vibrant community of independance turn into a community reliant on Government Benefits. Today we have a community endeavoring to heed the cries of our ‘old ones’ by acknowledging their sacrifices and telling our history in our own words. This is where the Ngati Pahauwera Development and Tiaki Trustees are at. Right down to dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s of our account.
CROSS CLAIMS
Another meeting was held between Ngati Hineuru and Ngati Pahauwera Trustees. The latest meeting held on 22 February 2010 was facilitated by John Clarke and observed by two Crown officials. We restated our stance, that we would not hinder their Treaty settlement negotiations or prevent them from a fair hearing of their concerns in regards to our interests. The meeting was held in a convival manner. We could not agree on one point only, which was our claim to .5 of an hectare on the Mohaka River Conservation. Ngati Pahauwera Development Trust agreed to reduce the are that a Statutory Acknowledgement was granted on Tearaponui - Cashes Bush, so it would not effect Ngati Hineuru’s financial redress in this area. We are both only trying to attain the best deal for our people with this once only chance.
A cross claim meeting is coming up next week between Ngati Pahauwera and Maungaharuru Tangitu Trust. They have concerns with our claimant definition, areas of interest - being - Core Area, Wider Area and Protocol Area, the Protocols of DOC, Arts, Culture and Heritage, Fisheries and River redress. We will answer their concerns and perhaps help them progress their Treaty Claims beyond their problems with our claims. Mr John Clarke will once again facilitate.
CARBON CREDITS
With the return of the Mohaka Forest, interest has been shown in how we intend to use these credits. The Trustees met with Willie Te Aho a whanau member with some expertise in this area, he advised us of three options:
- Join a NZU entity ( A Maori Enterprise)
- Crown Afforestation Partnership
- Sell using a broker
No decision was made, will need to take to the next Hui-a-iwi for the people to decide.
RIVER SCOPING STUDY
One of the Ngati Pahauwera claim issues is the problems we have identified with the health of our rivers. A scientific inspection of the river was completed by Lee Taitua, a scientist of Tainui descent with a written document. The Crown require a study made on the hoof so to speak. In cooperation with HBRC our Trustees will go out with a team to complete this report. This means reports taken during the day and night at different points on the Rivers.
BENEFICIARY ROLL
The roll is growing but not as fast as we would like though. Also a ‘little bird’ said there are quite a few around home who haven’t registered. With re-elections coming up for three Trustees you can’t vote if you are not registered. Actually you can’t participate in any activity when a vote is needed. Come on ahi karoa stand up and be counted, fill in those forms. Marie, Michelle and Tangiwai will help you fill them in.
