Sites of Significance / Cultural Audit Project
Ngati Pahauwera Development Trust has just completed a Cultural Audit on The Department of Conservation lands identified for return. This work adds to the information from Treaty Claims research, The Meridian Cultural Impact statement, and the TPK funded cultural impact report. The work looked at each DOC area to identify historic names, wahi tapu, Pa sites, mahinga kai areas of our Tipuna and korero associated with these places. The information was put onto maps, a report booklet and discs. The work was funded by the Crown Forest Rental Trust. The Ngati Pahauwera Development Trust was assisted in this work by Archaeologists and Historians as well as Matakite. The Cultural Audit provided us with the information to negotiate with the Minister of Treaty Claims on why we wanted the areas returned. This meant the Minister had to give us all of some of the blocks back instead of just a small bit.
The final report is a valuable Cultural resource for our future generations. Crown Forest will produce a limited number of books on the work and we will send a free copy to Ngati Pahauwera members who can give us a unique story about a Ngati Pahauwera place name in our rohe. Just a few sentences will do. It might be the name of a place on the whanau farm, the name of a creek, a fishing spot, a Pa you heard your grandmother talk about. We would like to know exact location of the area you identify as well.
Cultural Redress
Ngati Pahauwera has recently received a letter from the Crown officials recognising the significant interests of Ngati Pahauwera south of the Waikare river. This means we will be able to add other DOC reserves to the ones that have already been promised for return. Ngati Pahauwera is meeting with the Minister of Treaty Claims on Friday 29th January 2010 to revisit some of the Treaty issues.
Cultural Revitalisation of Ngati Pahauwera
The Ngati Pahauwera Development Trust at its last meeting agreed to facilitate a day when Ngati Pahauwera could come together to celebrate their Ngati Pahauweratanga. Music, kapa haka, workshops, raft race etc. If you can think of a name we should use for that day emera mai.
