Crown Negotiations
We have a great deal to get through this year and so negotiations with the Crown will intensify as we progress. We have already been slightly interrupted with the Foreshore and Seabed Review as many of the Crown negotiators from the Ministry of Justice have been assigned to the review team. This has meant a lot more focus will be required from now on.
Hui A Iwi
Our last Hui-A-Iwi was held at Waihua Marae in May to discuss the claimant definition. Further Hui-A-Iwi will include the following:
-
27 June - Kahungunu Marae
-
25 July - TBC
-
22 August - Mohaka Marae
-
26 September - TBC
-
31 October - TBC
It is important for as many as possible to attend these meetings. While the deed of settlement will need to be ratified we still need your input to ensure that your views are taken into consideration.
Resource Management Act Review
The Trust made submission in relation to the Resource Management Act (RMA) and were asked to make a presentation to the RMA Select Committee by conference call. Our lawyer Grant Powell appeared on behalf of the Trust. Our submission was reported in the New Zealand Herald on the 27 May. It was our submission that the changes to the RMA were still inconsistent with the Treaty of Waitangi and that they made inclusion Maori more problematic. Furthermore that Maori were ignored and excluded from decision-making under the RMA and the Act’s processes are uncertain, expensive and time-consuming. See New Zealand Herald article attached.
Foreshore and Seabed Review
The Trust was invited to appear before the Foreshore and Seabed Review Committee in Wellington which was a very successful meeting. We appeared before former Judge Eddie Durie and Richard Boast. We are the only iwi in the country who had made an application to the Maori Land Court to the heard on customary rights. We have also made submissions on the Foreshore and Seabed Review.
