In early March, Willie Jackson (Labour MP, currently the Minister of Employment and Associate Minister for Māori Development) visited the Ngāti Pāhauwera Development Trust offices where we presented on successful past, current and future training and employment opportunities. As a new Minister he needs to get a sense of who is doing what around the country – Labour’s priority is the regions and it was a good opportunity for NPDT to show that we are a credible partner, that we are getting on with it and that when we work with various agencies, that we are able to deliver. Please click on the link Employment Presentation 2018 to view what we presented to him. We are working in a range of areas and are delivering training and employment success to our members, many of whom live in our traditional communities. In terms of the training – over 90% of the 72 places were filled by members living in the takiwā. With employment – again the percentages are very high with approximately 85% of the 48 employment positions below being filled by members living in the takiwā (noting that some progressed from the Restoration Project). The majority of these members are from Raupunga and Mohaka. These numbers do not include our office and some other project staff, who again are mainly members. The Information Technology project is different in that it is open to the community, and encouraging employment pathways to rangatahi rather than a specific training course. IT club membership is going to be offered to our members in Mohaka and Napier in the near future.
Past successful projects were:
River Restoration Project 2015-2017 (9 jobs) when this project ended some of these employees are now employed as part of the Farm Fencing team.
Conservation Partnerships Training 2015 (12 participants) some of these trainees are now employed as part of the Farm Fencing and nursery team.
Rangatahi Driver Licensing 2017 (20 participants)
Firearms Licensing 2017 (40 participants)
